VGDJ: Shownotes #042

[00:00] Who said we didn't ever play profane voicemails?!
[00:54] *psshh* Now boarding, VGDJ airlines... OK, just kidding. We're all back in our respective homes, but that doesn't mean we can't have some fun. Oh yeah, and it isn't quite the end of the month yet, so toss us those last few votes.
[02:12] The Rama Report: PLAY (the video game music documentary, that is) adds a clip of some live performance footage to YouTube. ..wait, that's it? Well, a short Rama report is better than nothing!
[03:45] ReMix Review: From Mega Man 2: 'Wily and the Deep Forest' by Diggi Dis ... Continuing with his trademark groove-oriented instrumental style, Diggi Dis has created a very tight ReMix that we enjoyed just about all the way through. The only smudge on this otherwise excellent track was a sort of fakey string sample at the introduction, but that was quickly forgotten as the mix continued and developed. Worth mentioning; Diggi Dis is part of an urban record label, Urbanizm Music, founded by fellow ReMixer DCT. So if you liked this style, consider checking out Urbanizm for more good stuff.
[08:23] The Compo Report: PRC68, PRC69, TOMC13, FLMC2, and ORC47. It just ain't the same live! :(
[11:21] Otakon is not all that far off, and even those of you who aren't normally anime-convention regulars may be interested in this next one. We're planning on doing a video game music/OCReMix "panel" featuring djpretzel, GeoffreyTaucer, possibly sgx, and of course, us (so far). We'll be spreading the good word about the merits of dem funkay ReMixes, possibly through some audio/visual stuff, live performance, Q&A, who knows! It should be fun, so if you've ever been on the fence about dropping a bit of cash to go to Otakon, this should convince ya.
[13:27] The Meetup Report: The Otakon meetup (Aug 4-6 in Baltimore, MD) is looking good so far with a healthy list of attendees. Meanwhile, our Aussie friends have been hard at work finalizing the details of the AU meetup (or meetups). Finally, the Alberta meetup hasn't seen much progress made on finalized plans, but the people interested aren't giving up yet.
[16:49] GeoffreyTaucer and co. call from Dale North's house prior to the OneUps Live concert!
[17:53] It's a bonanza of live video game music!! PLAY! - a Video Game Music Symphony just performed in Chicago but the tour isn't over by any stretch of the imagination, so check out the website to see if it's coming by your area. Video Games Live performs next week in Philadelphia and that too will be traveling all over the country in the next few months - and apparently, even a few other countries as well! Of course, PLAY's world tour begins even sooner. It's a good time to be a video game music fan.
[19:03] Russian ReMix Roulette: This week's lineup was a blast from the past, with five of the six mixes on the roulette being at least several years old. And while we've returned to losing consistently, perhaps when zircon tosses the die of fate next week things will be different... muahahaha! Anyway, we ended up with a real classic. From Punch Out!!: 'Dream Fighter' by Scott Peeples.
[26:35] zircon is still slogging through the last few weeks of the term, but he's managed to start a third original album which is well-underway. Meanwhile, pixietricks is going to be moving soon, which will leave the show's editing (temporarily, at least) in the hands of zircon - a frightening thought, indeed. And... a Final Fantasy 7 ReMix Project? zomg! Ya'll stay tuned for details.
[30:17] Thus concludes another chapter in the VGDJ saga. Thou shalt be sure to lend us your votes, as we are doing better than ever. Also, if you have an OCR forum account, feel free to hang out in our thread and check out the meetup pics.
[33:07] VOICEMAIL: Jaswald, Abadoss, I Like Cheesesticks Guy?, Don't Die Guy?, Kudorans?, OUL People (Geoffrey Taucer, Flik, Mazedude, Shael Riley, Dale North, Ailsean, LAOS), Math Guy?
[39:04] [stinger]

VGDJ: Shownotes #041

[00:00] WOOO! It's our birthday :D
[01:07] We're comin' at you from the heart of Philadelphia! Fans from across the country have rallied to our call: Paul Owens, Paul Levering, Asif, Merk, Joel, Dave (Rudilcaper), Jerry, Cyan_Ide, Justin (gamerscalling), bustatunez, and José the Bronx Rican are all present for this special anniversary episode.
[05:22] The Rama Report: The pressure was greater than ever, but he pulled through for us in the end! A week of birthdays; Beatdrop turns 20, Rama turns 21, and VGDJ turns 1 (yay!). The OneUps announce that their next show will also be their last, for a variety of reasons. Finally, prominent game remixers Game Over releases their second album "NESperado", available for $6 from their website.
[08:10] ReMix Review: From Zelda 2: 'Mirror and Transparent' by Rellik ... Though only a few people at the meetup had heard this one (see folks? we're on the cutting edge!) there's no denying it's going to be a classic. Featuring nothing but default FLStudio sounds, this mix is highly energetic with a great arrangement and rock-solid production. Very enjoyable overall.
[10:59] ReMix Review: From Rayman 2: 'Disconnected' by chthonic ... It's certainly been a good week for electronic mixes at OCR! This is another excellent track with lots of cool percussion and a not-so-discrete "Yankee Doodle" cameo. What more can be said? It's YANKEE DOODLE!!!
[13:11] The Compo Report: We got to see Cyan_Ide! He's actually real, and he brought us the absolute latest in competition news LIVE; ORC47, PRC68, TOMC13, and FLMC2.
[15:47] We were delighted to see Paul Levering and Paul Owens, creators of PLAY: A Video Game Music Documentary, show up to this meetup, and we thought it would be a great time to get an interview with them. Paul & Paul explain the history of the film, where the idea for it came from, who's going to be involved, their current progress, and their plans, and they even answered a few questions from the 'audience'. Not to mention the whole thing was caught on tape by Asif, their cameraman. We got a sneak peak of the movie later in the day, but worry not - a clip will be available online soon, and we'll be sure to keep you updated on this very exciting project.
[27:09] The Meetup Report: Well, it's not live... but we love DrumUltimA anyway. The AU meetup that has been in the works, organized by V___, is finally coming together; location is still being decided. A possible Canada meetup in Alberta is being discussed, with Lionaje and Xelebes more or less organizing the event. Finally, GeoffreyTaucer is still gauging interest for his Parkour meetup, planned for Raleigh, North Carolina.
[30:45] It's the UK VGDJ Meetup! Hi guys!
[32:48] Russian ReMix Roulette: A fierce battle ensues on the peaceful greens of Rittenhouse Square! Tensions were high after we split off into groups, each person at the meetup selecting the remix they wanted to hear - but ONE MAN emerged victorious; zircon, correctly selecting Sonic 3D Flickie's Island 'Power Puppet' by Jivemaster. At last, the losing streak is over!
[40:50] Egads! It's a veritable array of messages and questions to deliver to djpretzel!
[44:17] Well, it's been a fun show, but now it's time to wrap it up. We hope you all had as much fun listening to this episode as we had recording it. Oh, and one more thing..
[45:51] vote vote vote VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!
[46:42] VOICEMAIL: Abadoss, Jaswald, some drunk Irish sonofabitch, Upthorn, and Soniclover.

VGDJ: Shownotes #040

[00:00] After a one week hiatus, zircon and pixietricks are quite enthused to be back in action. Goooo VDGJ! Err, VGDJ. Yeah.
[01:37] We're doing better than ever on PodcastAlley, all thanks to you guys. But don't stop there, keep the votes coming!
[03:29] In case you didn't know, VGDJ has a thread on the OCR forums where you can find the latest discussion, news, and silliness. You're all invited to come and post. :>
[04:39] The Rama Report: That slacker Rama is finally on the ball again. McVaffe and his friends have started a new video game-oriented satire and humor website, GamerGasm (be warned, it's slightly explicit). ThaSauce had its one year birthday on May 5th. OverCoat released a free original album, Memories EP on April 25th. Finally, the evening before E3, virt performed live with a few other artists, being watched by such celebrities as Mustin and The Wingless.
[07:21] ReMix Review: From Super Double Dragon: 'No.5 (Snapdragon)' by ParagonX9 ... "Funtronica" at it's best. ParagonX9 serves up a sizzling platter of synths and beats which we were feeling the whole way through; but the time signature change and the switches between the breakbeat and hardcore styles were what set this mix apart.
[10:33] ReMix Review: From Super Metroid: 'Brinstar Bonsai Garden' by Red Tailed Fox ... Though it caused a bit of disagreement among the OCR judges, this mix is definitely a smooth, jazzy treat. It's not be as straightforward as many other ReMixes, but we're pretty sure that you'll be diggin' da improv action in this one. Check it out.
[13:47] ReMix Review: From Jurassic Park: 'Concerto for Velociraptor' by Koelsch1 ... Another jazzy remix? Jazz bias, zomg! But seriously, this combo orchestral + sax mix is pretty solid all around. A somewhat simple orchestral background supports the nicely performed sax lines which really carry the song. Does this combo work? You'll have to listen and decide.
[16:52] The Compo Report: A healthy serving of competitions this week - ORC46, ORC47, PRC67, PRC68, TOMC12, FLMC2, and PRC:A.
[19:12] We hope you all haven't forgotten about the upcoming Philadelphia meetup, celebrating the one year anniversary of VGDJ! Food, music, and merriment will accompany a live edition of the podcast, featuring special guest hosts. Not only that, but besides a cadre of fans and remixers, Paul Levering and Paul Owens of PLAY: A Video Game Music Documentary Film will be there. It's going to be awesome.
[21:20] The Meetup Report: The VGDJ Anniversary Meetup... in the UK! It's scheduled for May 20th in London, with more specific details available in the thread on OCR. Back in the states, a Chicago, Illinois meetup is planned around the PLAY! video game music concert. This is scheduled for May 27th. A possible Australia meetup is in the works, organized by V____ but plans have not been established yet; check out the thread if you're interested. GeoffreyTaucer is considering a meetup revolving around parkour, which the more athletic among you may want to check out. Finally, Canada meets are still being discussed.. but no plans yet.
[25:38] Russian ReMix Roulette: Will we EVER actually pick the remix that's going to be played?! Apparently not. :( Nonetheless, the dice of fate selected a mighty track indeed. From Castlevania 3: 'Stained Glass Filth' by goat.
[33:41] It's a look into the secret lives of VGDJ hosts! Or maybe they're not so secret, since we're talking about them. Anyway, pixietricks is busy pimpin' out ReMixes in her new job at GiGi's while zircon has been honing his skill at MIDI ripping and proper usage of drumloops at Drexel U. But despite our crowded schedules, we can't wait for next week's meetup, where, surely, we will be overwhelmed by a sea of loyal Philadelphian VGDJ fans.
[36:57] Over and out! That's all for this week. Drop us a line and keep the votes coming!
[38:52] VOICEMAIL: OmegaSephiroth, Abadoss, the woohoo guy, OmegaSephiroth & friends, Less Ashamed of Self (rofl), and Leomania.
[42:45] [stinger]

VGDJ: Shownotes #039

[00:00] Aaaand we're back to our original "new" intro!
[02:00] It's a new month, and ya'll know what you oughta do... vote for us at Podcast Alley and propel us above the Emo Kids. You can do it!
[02:45] The Rama Report: EHHHHH! Well, he doesn't have a report, but Rama does dispel common misconceptions about Fusion2004's awesomeness, or lack thereof.
[04:56] ReMix Review: From Chrono Trigger: 'Chronodyne Marine' by ambient ... We were pretty impressed by this hard-hitting techno mix by "ahhmbiohnt", who has only one other ReMix on the site. The synthy, MIDI guitar was our only beef, but we dug the whole package anyway. Listen and hear for yourself!
[09:36] The Compo Report: Cyan_Ide gets no love from us this week, despite his news from; TOMC12, PRC66, PRC67, FLMC2, ORC46, PRC:A, and the Demoscene Competition.
[13:19] Some very cool stuff is on the horizon from Paul Levering and Paul Owens. They're working on a documentary about video game music; how it has evolved, it's impact on a whole generation of composers and musicians, and how it has affected an entire part of our culture. Though still in production phases, Paul & Paul have obtained the support and contribution of many pro game composers and ReMixers alike, from Tommy Tallarico to Mustin to tefnek and even pixietricks! For more information, check out their MySpace and spread the word.
[16:48] The Meetup Report: DrumUltimA is verbally assaulted by pixietricks in the comfort of his own room before getting into the meat of things: the VGDJ 1st Anniversary Meetup in Philaldephia, pictures from the Fargo Meetup, and some stuff about Canada. Back to anime..
[20:02] Russian ReMix Roulette: Why do we keep losing?! BLARGH! Well, at least we ended up with a good one ... from Super Mario 64: 'Sunken Suite' by djpretzel.
[24:33] There seems to be a recurring theme in the conversation here. But wii just can't seem to figure out what it is... hmm... *groan*
[25:37] Game! Set! Match! That's our show. Remember; new month, new votes - thanks for listening!
[27:04] VOICEMAIL: Blessing candy to Joyzilla, Omega Sephiroth, Fusion2004, Abadoss, and Rama for their calls.
[32:09] [stinger]

- Azumanga Daioh stuff surrounding the Compo Report
