VGDJ: Shownotes #046

[00:00] Here at VGDJ, we share your outrage about chipped consumer electronics. Shame on you, Nintendo!
[01:10] We tried. We really did. But we just couldn't restrain ourselves... It's another special episode, this time featuring the peeps at the mini-meetup celebrating zircon's birthday over the weekend in Baltimore. More on that later. For now? You vote. Yes.
[03:54] It's time for the first ever VGDJ trivia contest... But this is not just any contest. Oh no. It's the first official "VGDJ Awkward Trivia Giveaway"! We'll be asking a series of questions over the next few shows, with one winner per week. This week, the prize is a signed copy of SGX's new album "Chroma" as well as his second album "Better Than Sliced Beats." All you need to do is send us an email by Thursday (vgdjpodcast@gmail.com) answering the weekly question. This week's question is: What does one use knives for here on VGDJ? Who said it, and on what episode? Oh, and don't forget - to help us select the winner, you need to tell us an embarassing (but amusing) anecdote of some kind that we can tell all our listeners. Hop to it!
[07:12] The Rama Report: CompoST 62 has occured with the theme of "dogfight"; Skrypnyk was the de-facto winner. Over at the OCR forums, the OCR moves tournament has begun. Remix: ThaSauce has implemented a tagging system to help with categorization of remixes on the site. Lastly, DJ Siamey has released a work-in-progress of a Pirates of the Caribbean song.
[10:47] ReMix Review: From Mega Man 6: 'Fortress of the Knight' by Vurez ... We were a bit on the fence over this one. Vurez never fails to bring superb production values to his ReMixes, and he has been one of the few people to cover the relatively unpopular MM6 soundtrack, but stylistically this mix wasn't quite our cup of tea. However, that isn't to say it's not a very high-quality song with a strong arrangement, so check it out for yourselves and see what you think!
[13:05] ReMix Review: From Secret of Mana: 'Dark Star Scherzo' by Jormungand ... Call it techno-bias but OCR just doesn't have all that many solo piano ReMixes in comparison to everything else, so it was refreshing to hear a well-done solo piano mix by a new ReMixer in the scene. This track really builds on the original and is expertly sequenced (performed, if you will) and earns a glowing recommendation from us.
[16:28] The Compo Report: There are but two competitions in the report this week. TOMC14 and PRC70.
[18:06] The date and time for our Otakon panel has been finalized: August 4th at 10am. While we aren't quite thrilled with such an early timeslot, we encourage everyone who plans on attending the con to visit the panel, which will have plenty of good audio/visual... goodness.
[19:55] The Meetup Report: Liontamer has started a thread detailing all of the OCR meetups, but he needs some help filling it out. If you have any information or pictures from previous meetups, check out the thread and post 'em. The Australia meetup in Sydney is finalized for Saturday, July 1st at the town hall steps, and the attendees are armed to the teeth with silverware, video games, electronics, and all that good stuff. Info on Perth and Brisbane meetups can be found in the same thread. The Otakon meetup is still happening (in addition to the panel, no less). Finally, Saskatchewan meetups are being discussed; can't forget about those!
[24:55] Russian ReMix Roulette: Well, well! This week's roulette certainly went in our favor (zircon note: I attribute it to my excellent dice skills)! The perennial favorite 'Love Hurts' by djpretzel from the game Sonic the Hedgehog was selected. Go us :D
[32:08] It's meetup merriment in Maryland! TristorTrucido, Benzo, djpretzel, Liontamer, D-Lux, GeoffreyTaucer, MythrilNazgul, and Moguda join zircon and pixietricks for an evening of lollygagging at pixietricks' apartment. Liontamer and D-Lux offer their thoughts on hosting their own radio shows, VG Frequency and Very Good Music (VGM) respectively. Of course, our carefully structured interview session rapidly turns into a Lover Reef singalong, led by Liontamer and his beautiful singing voice. Little else needs to be said about this most awe-inspiring display of raw talent.
[47:13] We out. The meetup was a blast (zircon says: "I certainly had fun!") and Larry and Benzo even helped us in giving the closing contact info (vote plz)! Thanks for tuning in, and we look forward to hearing your trivia contest entries. (cue villainish laugh)
[49:09] VOICEMAIL: LoChoco, Abadoss, LoChoco (again), and Upthorn.
[52:25] [stinger] ... kawaii!!!! ^.^;;;

VGDJ: Shownotes #045

[00:00] A slightly different intro for this show. Hey, don't look at us. You guys asked for it! :P
[01:31] Ah, the beginnings of *another* glorious special edition of VGDJ. This week we'll have coverage from the 8-bit Genocide concert.. though "we" in this case means "pixietricks" as zircon can't go :( Nonetheless, it's good stuff. Oh, and since we're rockin' the charts at podcastalley, keep votin'.
[04:29] The Rama Report: In the absence of a NEW Rama Report, we've decided to give you something that you can listen to anytime and anywhere! It's... "Rama's Greatest Hits" brought to you by VGDJ Records!
[07:20] ReMix Review: From Earthbound: 'Nirvana' by Dhsu ... David Hsu is truly an excellent PEE-AHN-IST and never fails to disappoint with his expressive, flowing solo piano ReMixes. This song is no exception, taking a minimal tune and arranging it into something really beautiful. Even if the title calls forth images of Kurt Cobain, check this one out.
[10:35] ReMix Review: From Star Control 2: 'Lightyears Away' by Mark Vera ... Tight, 80s style beats mixed with cool synths - can't go wrong there. The ReMixer himself offers a few thoughts on the track, including an interesting tidbit; he personally knows one of the original composers of the Star Control 2 OST, hence why he likes remixing it. If you like this style, grab Mark's other tracks on OCR, and also head to MarkVera.net and Spacesynth.net, his personal site and music community, respectively.
[15:21] ReMix Review: From Secret of Mana: 'Dueling Consoles' by Shnabubula ... Ok, so zircon can't pronounce his name, but by now, you all should be familiar with Shnab's style - this mix really nails it. Simple chip sounds fighting with one another become a highly awesome sonic amalgamation, turning a somewhat dreary source tune into something way cooler.
[19:19] The Compo Report: PRC70 and TOMC13. Rather short this week, eh? (Pixie edit: Poor wittel snufflekins! Everybody wish Cyan_Ide and zircon well. They are *both* sick now. D:)
[21:23] Danny Adler - aka sgx - offers pixietricks the inside scoop on his new, original album: Chroma (available now at his website). We'll be giving away three signed copies of this highly awesome album over the next few shows, along with his previous remix album (Better Than Sliced Beats) so stay tuned!
[26:01] The Meetup Report: The Australia meetups are being finalized, with the Sydney meetup (Saturday, July 1st) being definite. An Otakon 2006 meetup is also being planned in addition to our actual panel. A Saskatchewan meetup is in the works, though it's status is still indefinite. Lastly, prominent ThaSauce contributor Xerol recently hosted a barbeque at his house in Maryland and has more planned for the future.
[31:01] Russian ReMix Roulette: Impossible. Improbable. INCONCEIVABLE!!!! For the first time in ten shows, pixietricks actually wins the RRR! And a fine track it is: Shnabubula makes another appearance in this episode with 'Behold the Winged Cathedral' from Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance. WOOOO!!!
[39:36] pixietricks: Ace Reporter conducts an interview of massive proportions at the 8-bit Genocide show. Lots of very interesting thoughts and insights into the motivation for VGM-inspired groups and the culture as a whole! Bands/artists who were there: Shawn Phase of temp sound solutions, Powerglove, Entertainment System, pIENESS, and This Place is Haunted. Rock on! \m/
[54:47] What would a special feature be without... music?! Have a taste of temp sound solutions with their track 'Ninja Gaiden 2', followed by Entertainment System's 'Metroid Brinstar', and lastly, Powerglove's 'Themes B and C' mix from Tetris (on their album Total Pwnage).
[60:02] That wraps it up for this episode - our second longest, but surely, you guys won't have a problem with that! Anyway, keep writing us emails and voicemails, buy our stuff, post in our thread, vote, you know the deal. We out.
[63:19] VOICEMAIL: Drunken WesPip, DrumUltimA, Robert Reese, Salty, RAYZAAAA, LAOS, and Arcana (?).
[69:45] [stinger] ... (zircon edit: AAAARGH I'm going to kill you, Jill!!!!!)

VGDJ: Shownotes #044

Before we get started, it's worth noting that last week's Video Games Live episode actually got made into a front page feature at OCR and was sent to various related media outlets (rock on!) Also, as you may have noticed, not only did Tommy Tallarico comment on our site about the last show, but he even made a thread on OCR about VGL and has been pretty active there answering questions and responding to our posts. Thanks, Tommy! Lastly, we noticed that the VGL site has been updated with info and pics from the Philly show; we were mentioned and linked to, and pictures are up there as well.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled programming... :>

[00:00]
A timeless mystery: WTF is Ryu saying?!
[00:54] Our hosts are pumped up for a butt-kickin', Street Fighter 2-themed show. In fact, with your help, we've fought our way to the top of the music charts on PodcastAlley. So just keep those assists coming and we'll be one step closer to 'world champion'!
[04:28] The Rama Report: May results for Dwelling of Duels are in (goat came in first) and June's DoD theme is Goemon, Mystical Ninja. VGM remixer xoc releases a new, experimental album. zyko has also released a new album of original music, entitled "Survival", at VGmix. Rama has finished an OCR skin for Winamp 3, but more importantly, has been working with Dhsu on an OCR-skinning and customization project called "OverClocked ReMix ReMix".
[10:37] ReMix Review: From Metal Slug 2: 'No Need to Reload' by RoeTaKa ... After numerous very close attempts at getting a ReMix on the site, this was the winner for Roe, and for good reason! This mix is a high-octane, over-the-top synth rock track that can be easily likened to the energetic remixes of S.S.H. The gritty and edgy sound might not be everyone's favorite, but there's no denying the quality of this one.
[14:27] The Compo Report: A slightly sickly Cyan_Ide encourages us to participate in and vote on various competitions: TOMC13, FLMC2, PRC69, and ORC48. Awwww, snufflenutters! ;_;
[16:56] Video game music and radio? Inconceivable, but it's true! GameMusicRadio features 24/7 streaming VGM (American and Japanese), as well as two radio shows that can be downloaded on demand, much like ours. Meanwhile, RadioSEGA is a UK-based internet stream also featuring 24/7 music (of course, only SEGA tunes) with no talking. If you enjoy our show, give these two virtual stations a listen.
[19:57] The Meetup Report: Australia meetups are being developed, with a definite Sydney meetup on July 1st at the Town Hall steps. Perth and Briz-BUN meetups are also planned for July, but have not been set in stone.
[23:03] Russian ReMix Roulette: Will zircon's fantasy of seven-sharp piano music be fulfilled? What about pixietricks and her deep-rooted TO bias? The answer is a resounding "NO"; oh well, even the presence of Tommy Tallarico couldn't help our luck, so we don't feel so bad. Anyway, orkybash's mix isn't bad either - from Final Fantasy 6: 'Ruined Skies'.
[31:52] Shael Riley: veteran ReMixer, community hero, and director of the Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo Project, Blood on the Asphalt. He has joined us for an extensive interview covering the concept of the project, its history, the ups and downs, and much more. Thanks for the interview, dude! Awesome job to everyone involved. Also, check out Shael's original album, jam packed with ridiculous fun!
[53:01] VOICEMAIL: Thanks Rama, Rexy, and Fusion2004! As you can see from Rexy's example, international callers ARE in fact able to reach our number. If you're British, this should work for you:
* Dial the access number for calls to the United States - check here for the number, which sometimes changes once in a while.
* When it says "please enter the number you would like to call and finish by pressing the hash (#) button" you just type 00 and THEN the VGDJ number. In this case it's 001 800 990 VGDJ (8435 if you can't see any letters imprinted on your phone).
* If you hear the VGDJ intro music followed by our hosts speaking about the answering machine, you know you're at the right place.

VGDJ: Shownotes #043

[00:00] Darkesword hookin' us up with the speech synth/beatbox action. Phat! Get ready for the longest show evaaaarrrrr.
[01:08] This week's show was recorded in a variety of locations, but we started in the dressing rooms backstage at Video Games Live accompanied by djpretzel. Anyway, there's a lot of podcast to be podcasted, so before you begin, drop us a vote at podcastalley.
[03:43] ReMix Review: From Ghouls 'N Ghosts: 'Poltergeist Mix' by binster ... A tasty combination of classic synth sounds and cutting-edge ones on top of an awesome beat. All three of us were diggin' this.
[06:04] ReMix Review: From Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: 'New Mexican Thunderbird' by Vurez ... It might not be very urban in the traditional sense, but this very unique remix certainly deserves it's spot on the Blood on the Asphalt remix project.
[09:16] ReMix Review: From Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: 'Flying Heaven' by zircon ... Yes. YES. You might not think ethnic instruments and slammin' breakbeats would combine well, but as demonstrated by this mix, they most certainly do.
[12:07] ReMix Review: From Raptor: 'PlectraSubCity' by TO ... Smooth, ambient material in this one. pixietricks was swooning over TO's vocals, which were the high point of this solid remix.
[15:31] Co-composer for Halo and Halo 2 Michael Salvatori grants us an interview telling about his experience writing for one of the most popular franchises of all time.
[23:39] The video game pianist Martin Leung showed up at VGL, much to the delight of everyone attending, and gave us an interview too! If you haven't seen this blindfolded, Mario-playing dude, you must be living under a rock. Great to meet you, Martin!
[28:47] Gerard Marino, the lead composer for God of War and it's in-development sequel, gives us his thoughts on the state of video game music today, as well as his own experience working on an epic soundtrack.
[38:15] It's not just about the orchestral music! Marcus Henderson, the primary player for Guitar Hero and the upcoming sequel, was happy to talk with us. Rock on, dude, rock on.
[44:00] Composer, conductor.. remixer? Composer Jack Wall had a lot to say about his work for the Myst series, his upcoming projects, and more.
[53:28] Tommy Tallarico; does this legendary American vgm composer really need an introduction? We sat down with him for a bit and got a nice, full-length interview. But that's not all. He also helped with...
[70:38] Russian ReMix Roulette: Before the epic, heavy-metal rolling of the die, Tommy gives us an exclusive about an upcoming project - listen closely, because it's awesome! Anyway, while an Earthworm Jim remix was on the list, double T's dare-devil, heavy metal roll landed on Wizards and Warriors: 'Theme' by bazooie.
[75:45] We are left with an inspirational message to the members of the OCR community, and a prediction about the future of video game music that we certainly hope is going to come true. Thanks, Tommy!
[79:09]
We're at the meet and greet right after VGL with Merk, Atma Weapon, Steve (D-Lux), and Moguta who all tell us what they thought of the show. Believe it or not, the line to meet all the composers (and djp) was so long that not even everyone got to get autographs before the theatre closed. Video game music unpopular? Not today! XD
[81:10] Phew! What a day, and what an episode. We have nothing but love for the people who put Video Games Live together - thanks for all the interviews. Check out all the pics in our Action Shot Photo Album, starting on page 5! Also, Paul & Paul were there the whole time picking up some great footage, so don't forget to check their site for news on their upcoming video game music documentary. Now, after hearing all that, surely you've voted for us by now... right? We loooooove youuuuuu...
[83:48] VOICEMAIL: Abadoss, Agent Scazers, and Less Ashamed of Self.
[86:17] [stinger]
