VGDJ: Shownotes #050

[00:00] It takes intense mental and physical discipline to record a podcast, especially a milestone episode like this one. But if there's one thing your hosts can do, it's stay cool.
[01:16]
Our fiftieth momentous episode has begun! So, voting would be appropriate. Still, our plans for the episode (or lack thereof) seem a bit mundane...
[02:14] ...until our good friend The Wingless arrives, bringing us good tidings from Midway! Three hosts at the same time? What could be better?
[03:35] Maybe... four hosts! Rayza joins in on the action and fills us in on his various doings in the field of sound design and working with film.
[04:46] But what would a reunion be without our other senior host, Aurora?! The noble citizens of Canadia will have to wait for their weather on this fine evening. Brace yourselves, VGDJ listeners, for the power of all five past and present VGDJ hosts is at hand!
[06:53] ReMix Review: From Zelda: 'Hyrule's Angel (The Sleeping Beauty)' by Game Over ... Hailing from the far-reaches of Sweden, Game Over has imported their unique brand of "Nintendo Metal" to OCR. Rayza and Aurora didn't think this one ranked among their most polished or creative mixes, but a solid entry into the ranks of rock ballad ReMixes nonetheless.
[10:44] ReMix Review: From Eternal Champions: 'Perpetual Motion' by zircon ... Despite being under the intense pressure of having the review-ee in the same Skype chat, Wingless has nothing but praise for this latest electronic mix from our very own zircon, who takes the opportunity to extol the virtues of the under-appreciated Eternal Champions soundtrack.
[14:35] Doug Perry? You've been REPLACED! But hopefully you'll forgive us this one time. Rayza and Aurora discuss the annual OCR Toronto meet (unmod thread here), coming up on September 30th, which both of them will be attending. Unfortunately, they were also too lazy to actually have much of a part in planning it, and so while Mahaboo has volunteered to pick up the ball, no other details are available. Tsk, tsk!

Back in the states, the Otakon panel (10am on August 4th) is the first planned location for the Otakon meetup, which may extend to Saturday, the 5th, as well. Check out the thread for more developments there. Also of interest to those of you going to Otakon is the Good Nintentions Cosplay Ball, a videogame-themed concert at the Sidebar (218 E. Lexington Street in Baltimore). Starting at 9PM you can expect to see such favorites as Entertainment System, Chromelodeon, Temp Sound Solutions, and NS Geist. Don't forget to bring your costume ;)

[20:00] We couldn't let this entire episode go by without giving Cyan_Ide, DrumUltimA, and Rama at least something. So, we granted them their own three-person segment, which Wingless so lovingly has coined "The Very,Very Bottom of the Very, Very Barrel". As it turns out, they had a few choice words for zircon and pixietricks.. that's coming out of your paychecks, guys!!
[25:22] Loyal fan, steadfast idler, and all-around cool listener debeerguy007 created a set of VGDJ-themed wallpapers! The images contained therein are wondrous and filled with lots of "swishing around". You can pick 'em up right here, even if Wingless objects.
[27:14] All good things must come to an end, and the first ever VGDJ Awkward Trivia Contest Giveaway is no exception. Answering our final question correctly (it was Noob, pixietricks' bird), Less Ashamed of Self brought down the house with a Lover Reef tribute that no doubt took a disturbing amount of free time to create; in the process, he took home the mother lode of CDs from Temp Sound Solutions, Powerglove, and Entertainment System. However, here at VGDJ we're all about team spirit, so we'd like to honor the other entries to the contest in a special runner-up medley. Our hats are off!
[36:52] Just when you thought you were safe from people randomly joining conversations.. it's djpretzel!! Yes, the one and only creator of OCR joins us for the second time in VGDJ history. We figured it would only be appropriate to give him a five-host interview about how OCR was conceived, the stuff that's going on behind the scenes (and boy is there a lot of stuff), and the future of the site. The pretz is more than happy to oblige us with some juicy insider info!
[52:37] Now, we couldn't Dave go without some personal questions; namely, what upcoming ReMixes we can look forward to - as it turns out QUITE a few, from a whole range of games. And though he has not been mistaken for Dr. Pepper recently, he does share with us a story or two about how his internet stardom crossed over to.... real life. Gasp!
[59:01] Russian ReMix Roulette: Tradition, schma..dition.. or something. We execute a variation on our time-honored RRR this week by instead rolling from a pool of carefully selected remixes by your five hosts and djpretzel. The tensions were high as we had a top-notch list of ReMixes available, and there were even cries of foul play as Aurora rolled the die which landed on the ReMix she had selected. But! We gave our fellow host the benefit of the doubt.. not that she had picked a bad track to begin with: from Doom, it's 'demonik elektronik' by analoq.
[69:25] Aww.. it's lights out for this week's very special episode of VGDJ. As quickly as they arrived, it is time for all six podcast personalities to go their separate ways. But not before giving a final salvo of contact info! Surf, email, call, post, shop, and last but not least, rock the VOTE. Till next time!
[72:57] VOICEMAIL: Salty, DJAnubis, DJScorcher, DJAnubis, MagiNinja, Jiggles McPuff, Rama, JSMC, Sinclair44, Belthesar, and Max. Whoa.

VGDJ: Shownotes #049

[00:09] .........
[00:55] Welcome to the 49th edition of VGDJ! Observe as zircon and pixietricks attempt to speak with "smooth jazz" radio voices. Keyword: attempt. But hey, what better way to celebrate the very first installment of "The Flow Basket," zirc's new remixing tutorial? Coming up later on the show!
[01:54] EPISODE 050 IS ONLY ONE WEEK AWAY! CAN WE GET A HELL YEAH?!
[02:13] Contact infoz: www.vgdj.net, vgdjpodcast@gmail.com, our thread on OCR, IRC chat @ enterthegame.com #vgdj, our non-profit store, 1-800-990-VGDJ, VOTEY VOTE VOTE!
[04:09] Rama fails again. You know what? We don't need you! Just... just go away. ;_; (Pixie's threatening to file for a divorce, by the way...)
[05:11] ReMix Review: From F-Zero: 'The Flood Plain' by JigginJonT... Hiss or no hiss, it's difficult NOT to enjoy this new solo piano mix from OCR judge JJT. Rich chords, great rolls, and a beautiful sense of forward movement make this an arrangement worth remembering.
[07:42] ReMix Review: From Chrono Trigger: 'Town Life' by djpretzel and Geoffrey Taucer ... FIRST EVER (released) DJPRETZEL COLLAB! And he's singing. Like woah. Pixietricks doles out kudos to these remixers for their touching accoustic/vocal piece.
[10:48] Compo Report: Check out these remixing competitions and vote for your favorite song! PRC71, PRC72, and TOMC. Thank you, Chad, for not being a Rama. ^_~
[12:52] Announcing the third winner of our AWKWARD TRIVIA CONTEST GIVEAWAY! (Drum roll pleeeaaase...) It's DrumUltimA! Now I know what you guys might be thinking. "DrumUltimA? Why, he's a regular on the show, you nepotist bastards!" But you see, Doug went all out with his embarrassing nickname explanation. I think you'll understand when you hear it. So congrats for winning our last signed copies of SuperGreenX's remix albums "Chroma" and "Better Than Sliced Beats!"

For your chance to win the Episode 050 GRAND PRIZE: What unusual radio persona has been heard in the background of several of our more recent episodes of VGDJ? Think outside the box! And for the ultimate in radio embarrassment, we want to you hear your personal rendition of our Sonic & Knuckles mega collab with D-Lux, Geoffrey Taucer, and Shonen Samurai: 'Lover Reef.' The original lyrics can be found in that last link (click on the "Lyrics" tab), but feel free to come up with your own! Here is our karaoke version of the song for your recording pleasure. If you have no microphone for that purpose, you may instead call 1-800-990-VGDJ and leave us a voicemail with you singing a capella. As always, the entries are due by noon Thursday, at vgdjpodcast@gmail.com! Make us pee ourselves.

[24:30] Meetup Report: Glad to see that Drum's good fortune hasn't gotten to his head. Doug gives us the lowdown on the Otakon, Stratford Ontario, and Perth Australia meetups!
[29:16] Episode 1 of The Flow Basket has arrived! Have you ever wondered how to remix? Tried in the past to no avail? Then observe Master Zircon as he explains some of the basic methods of game music composition, and clears up a few urban legends of remixing! Here are a few popular programs to help you get started: Fruityloops Studio, Reason, Cubase, Cakewalk Home Studio, and Garageband. Also, you may find Soundfonts and OCR's ReMixing Forum useful for your purposes.
[40:58] Russian ReMix Roulette: As you can see from this week's roll, loyal fans of our show seem to get the lucky die! Sit back, relax, and enjoy a lovely piano arrangement by Dhsu: Mario Kart 64 'Rainbow Snowland.'

VGDJ: Shownotes #048

[01:05] Okay, wtf...? Mini episode MY ARSE! We may have cut out all the weekly reports and Russian ReMix Roulette, but this show still ended up coming to almost 40 minutes! In any case, your dearest cohosts have lives outside of VGDJ (believe it or not), and didn't have the time to edit a full show this week. Solly...
[04:07] VOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTE!
[05:00] But that's okay, because we have some special things in the works for our next two shows! Episode 049 will feature the very first installation of zircon's brand new remixing tutorial, appropriately titled "The Flow Basket." Aaaaaaand, as if that isn't enough, OUR FIFTIETH EPISODE IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. Many surprises in store.
[06:32] Announcing the second winner of our Awkward Trivia Contest Giveaway: lancer130! Congrats: your answer was thorough...........ly amusing! Hyuck hyuck. Be on the lookout for SuperGreenX's remix albums "Chroma" and "Better Than Sliced Beats," for they shall be arriving soon. And now, for your last chance to win these phat beats...

This week's question: We've had three *stingers thus far that have been connected in their theme and concept. Tell us what they are, and what episodes they were on. (And no, they aren't about Rama, because we totally make fun of him all the time. ^_~) Additionally, we would like to know your most embarrassing nickname, explained for all the world to hear! As always, be sure to email your response to vgdjpodcast@gmail.com by noon this Thursday!

* ("Stinger" is the term we use to describe the random bit we tack on at the very end of each show, after the voicemail section.)
[09:42] PIXIE PUBLICLY HUMILIATES ZIRCON by revealing his embarrassing nickname. But being a nice little fairy, she evens out the count with her own. What do you think? "Bear and Jillybean discuss the world of OverClocked ReMix, a community dedicated to the appreciation and reinterpretation of video game music"...? Hmmm, maybe next Easter.
[11:43] ReMix Review: From Awesome: 'Game Over (Cheeze Mix)' by Erik S ... OMG learn how to spell "cheese," kay? XD And cheesy it is... kind of like an 80's vampire movie! Solid work from Erik S.
[14:37] ReMix Review: From 7th Guest: 'Microscopism' by Mazedude ... Pixie must remember to wipe her drool listening to this sexy Mazedude remix. (Question is, does the adjective "sexy" modify the noun "Mazedude" or "remix" in this context? Guess you'll never know!) Zircon is very happy to read an original composer name that he can pronounce, and you're sure to dig this quirky industrial track!
[17:16] ReMix Review: From Final Fantasy 7: 'The Twelf Commandment' by Midee and Prozax ... A dynamic duo indeed! Midee and Prozax put their heads together yet again for a smashing rock/orchestral remix. Definitely check out the whole song from das linken above, because it was difficult to choose just one section to feature on the show. This piece is ever-changing!
[20:14] ReMix Review: From Zombies Ate My Neighbors: 'The Curse' by Christian Pacaud ... Captain Christian Pacaud of the U.S.S. Enterprise! XD This mix is a great example of "reinterpretation." The source tunes weren't all that great, to be quite honest, so we were impressed with what C-Pac was able to create under the circumstances. Exxxxcccellent. (Pixie edit: Oh yeah, and sorry about my laughing at your voice crack, Zirkie dear... NOT~~@~!)
[22:56] Still laughing!
[23:29] GET AWAY FROM US YOU SCARY CALLERS! Here is a little collection of disturbing voicemails we received this past week. Thanks Toot, Abadoss, and Ray...?
[28:47] OkayILoveYaByeByeeeeeeee: www.vgdj.net, vgdjpodcast@gmail.com, our thread on OCR, IRC chat @ enterthegame.com #vgdj, our non-profit store, 1-800-990-VGDJ, %^( shot photo album, and please please please please please please please please pleeeeeaaaase... vote for us on Podcast Alley!
[31:51]
VOICEMAIL: Thanks to DrumUltimA, Max from Germany, Shiver McTimber, Peter (Happy birthday, lover girl!), and Toot!
[38:55] [stinger]

VGDJ: Shownotes #047

[00:00] Even slightly addled celebrities love VGDJ!
[01:26] We wish a happy Independence Day to our American listeners. As for our non-American listeners? THBBBPPPPT. Join us as we commit acts of lollygagging and tomfoolery in our OCR thread. Also, it's a new month, so the rankings on podcastalley are cleared: thusly, please vote for us!
[05:05] We're considering recording a special episode (in between our normal releases) centered around the basics of ReMixing and how you can get started. If you're interested and have suggestions for the type of stuff you'd like to hear about, post in our thread or send us an email; vgdjpodcast@gmail.com .
[07:07] The Rama Report: :(
[07:59] ReMix Review: From Starfox 64: 'V to the X Power' by DZComposer ... A prominent contributor to the ReMixing forum on OCR, DZComposer specializes in orchestral mixes as well as Starfox. He does not let us down here with an intricate - albeit, slightly esoteric - arrangement. Those accustomed to dramatic, film score-esque orchestral mixes might be a little disappointed in this, but we recommend it nonetheless.
[11:10] ReMix Review: From Zelda 2: 'Battle of the Hylian Hero' by Random Hero ... Ok, so we weren't feeling this one too much. It's got all the makings of a solid orchestral ReMix, but we thought it lacked a certain expansiveness in comparison to the original, and that it relied on repetition too much. Perhaps we've been spoiled by all the exquisite orchestral mixes already on the site, so by all means, dig the track and make your own opinion.
[14:08] The Compo Report: FLMC, PRC, and TOMC. Elegantly presented as always, Chad.
[16:44] The first winner of the VGDJ Awkward Trivia Giveaway contest has been selected: it's q-pa! Congratulations! We'll be sending him a copy of SGX's newest album "Chroma" as well as his remix album "Better Than Sliced Beats." q-pa's anecdote involved him joining a university band and playing the bagpipes, which in and of itself is somewhat amusing, but he also sent us pictures of himself. In a kilt. You can see those in our album, of course. For everyone else that sent in something: it was a tough choice for us, as there was lots of funny material in there. You still have several more chances left!

Anyway, this week, it's up to you to prove to us that you've really been listening; how do both pixietricks and I pronounce the following ReMixer names: chthonic, ambient, McVaffe, and Shnabubula? In addition, we want to know the most embarassing CD (or MP3) in your music collection. Leave your answer as a voicemail at 1-800-990-VGDJ. Don't forget to email us your physical address so that we know where to send your goodies. As with last week, you have until noon Thursday (July 6th) to send in your answer.

[21:02] The Meetup Report: Bzzzzzzzzt.... The Otakon meetup (at Otakon 2006 of course) already has a good fourteen expected participants, and don't forget about the OCR panel at 10am August 4th! A good chunk of people have expressed interest in a Utah meetup in Salt Lake City, so if you're in the area, check that thread. Lastly, the Brisbane and Sydney meetups have finally happened: hooray!
[23:37] The folks at the Brisbane meetup (Dr. Wily, BlueMage, JamPaladin, Snooper1989, GSlicer, and Jivemaster) recorded a little something for us. Sounds like they had fun! Check out the thread for pictoorz.
[25:50] Russian ReMix Roulette: Ah-bay? Ayb? It looks like pronunciation is the theme of this show. It has been suggested that we start keeping score... (zircon edit: not if we count the Japanese composers!) But anyway, some old-school beats from BenCousins today. From Zelda: Link's Awakening: 'AnimalVillageGreenwichVillage'.
[32:10] Having seen each other three times in the last few months, we muse a bit on how fun OCR meetups can be, and how they can really make the community more tight-knit. Also, pixietricks pwns Noob... get it? :> Anyway, we be chillin' up in Pville again, and hopefully we'll be seeing the brothers Riley, DCT, and McVaffe soon too. Hey, we gotta take vacations too sometimes.
[37:23] Arguably, this is the first time in over a month that we haven't had a special episode.. though, one might consider the July 4th theme to be special, in a way. But I'm sure our loyal fans with 56k don't mind a less than 50 minute episode. VOTE since it's a new month, and send in your feedback to vgdjpodcast@gmail.com or post in our OCR thread. See ya next week!
[40:28] VOICEMAIL: debeerguy007, DrumUltimA, debeerguy007 again, fivre, dj scorcher (?), LAOS, zircon, and Pixie's dearest husband: Rama.
