VGDJ: Shownotes #054

[00:00] Does djpretzel, in fact, have "it" going on? You decide!
[01:10] Step aside, pixietricks. zircon's vocal prowess is not to be ignored. Anyway! Things have simmered down around these parts, and so we're back to our normal audio format. Three cheers for pixietricks for the insane amount of work she did putting together last week's show, and a special thanks to listener Kroze who assisted in encoding it.
[04:37] We're considering setting up a donation method due to our continued influx of new listeners (we may break 1TB in bandwidth this month) ... if you have any suggestions or comments about this, feel free to pop us an email about it at vgdjpodcast@gmail.com . In the meantime, you can support us for free by spreading the word through our Cafepress store merchandise. Don't forget to visit our thread on OCR too.
[06:02] Toss us a vote on podcastalley as you kick back and enjoy the episode. We're still rocking the Music/Radio category, but it's all thanks to you guys, so keep it up!
[06:43] The Rama Report: News straight from ThaSauce: An Ocarina of Time remix project has been started by Nario and Link12548 of VGmix. Two new arbiters were added to ReMix: ThaSauce, community members EazyP and Cerrax. MagiNinjA has revamped the website for the OrmGas Remix Project. Finally, the joke Duck Hunt remix project "Repercussions of Fowl Lamentation" (RoFL) has been rereleased.
[10:32] It's the Rama Club theme!
[10:39] ReMix Review: From Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: 'I Don't Fight Boys' by Malcos, Red Tailed Fox ... Now, as you may know from previous episodes, we're not so great at math here at VGDJ. But we do know this much; two veteran remixers + one good source tune = slick, jazzy hotness. All right, so it had a Garageband drumloop in there, but that's definitely no reason to pass up on this awesome collab effort.
[13:50] ReMix Review: From Tetris: 'Thirty-Plus Mix' by R3FORGED ... Tetris and techno? Well, it might not be the most shocking combination around, but newcomer R3FORGED takes the concept and raises the bar with this badass trance ReMix of the often-overlooked B theme. The ReMixer himself was kind enough to leave us with his thoughts on the mix and give us the skinny on how the funk he produces his tunes.
[18:41] The Compo Report: PRC, TOMC, and FLMC.
[20:26] SEGA!
[20:30] Ah, the not-so-elusive OCR Site Project. Apparently, it's mating season for ReMix projects as there are more of them than ever before - at least ten currently that are well underway. Since it would take a whole show to go into each and every one, we picked out some of the highlights. We touched on Project Chaos (Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles), Summoning of Spirits (Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Symphonia), Milkyway Wishes (Kirby Superstar), and Children of Edrick (Dragon Warrior 1-3), all of which are shaping up to be very good.

Projects that have just gotten started can be tracked at the ReQuests forum - if you're interested in participating, this is the stage where you can hop in. All projects that have significant progress are located in the Site Projects forum.

[27:33] lol omg secrets revealed! zircon divulges a few choice details about the status of the FF7 ReMix project that he has been directing. A VGDJ exclusive. ;)
[28:20] The Meetup Report: What a dedicated minihost. DrumUltimA manages to give us a report even though he's on vacation! First up on the list of meetups is Shael Riley Live, which will be on September 21st at Fat Baby in New York City. The concert is at 9PM, but there will also be a traditional meetup the day after at Shael's house. Next is a barbeque hosted by Xerol at his residence in Timonium, MD on August 25th and 27th. Lastly, OverCoat is planning two meetups; one at the Penny Arcade Expo in Bellevue, WA on August 25th-27th, and another (a picnic) on September 2nd in Seattle. Check the thread for details.
[32:08] Russian ReMix Roulette: After briefly poking fun at the names of various ReMixers, we get right down to business. pixietricks elects to spit the die this week (as per the requests of our undying legion of fans), selecting a tune that is very dear to the both of us; GrayLightning's 'Chasing the Phoenix', from Xenogears.
[41:37] zircon and pixietricks yearn for the glory days of OCR, where men were men and ReMix titles were totally awesome. Then, has the tale of McVaffe's alter egos really been forgotten so quickly? zircon thinks not.
[46:00] Oh LES! You're our hero. You give us so much, yet ask for so little. <3
[46:27] This is among the things you didn't ask for.
[47:02] OK kids, we think that's been enough of zircon singing for one show. Since we don't have a special ep coming up next week (OR DO WE?) we're gonna take this opportunity to just relax. Anyway, vote for us at podcastalley.com, check out the Cafepress store, and gaze upon our lovely visages at our photo album. Until next week, this has been... vuhguhdihjh.
[49:35] VOICEMAIL: Max & friends, jdproject, DJAnubis, Fragment, Samuel L. Jackson, BlackMage, and Snooper_1989.

VGDJ: Shownotes #052

[00:00] Larry "Liontamer" Oji gives us a thoughtful and detailed review of Otakon.
[01:13] Oh shnap! We've been talking about it for over a month now, but this is it: the Otakon show. We had a great time hanging out there, but more importantly, the OCReMix Panel was a smash hit.
[03:24] OCReMixer OverCoat - SeattleOverCoat, soc, whatever you prefer to call him - recently completed an Anime "Chipdisk" (thread), and it only seemed appropriate to use it for some BGM on this episode. You can pick up the full chipdisk for yourself right here.
[04:27] As of this writing, we seem to have momentarily fallen one spot behind in the rankings for Music/Radio podcasts on podcastalley. Now, we can't have that, can we?! Take a mere 10 seconds while you're listening to vote for us this month if you haven't already, and get that warm, fuzzy feeling. You can visit our OCR thread or our store too while you're at it!
[07:15] The OCR Panel: Right from the start, it was clear that we had more than a handful of people present. djpretzel starts by explaining the fundamentals of OCR and what the site is all about.
[09:27] We go into a little more detail about the submission process and how ReMixes are evaluated. It was somewhat heartwrenching to tell fans of Bubble Bobble (YEAH!) that drumloops over the original tunes aren't really OCR material, but oh well.
[10:57] pixietricks reassures the audience that groove bias is just a rumor, and that one can find all kinds of ReMixes on the site. And to prove it, we just happened to bring along a...
[11:29] ReMix Medley: Starting with 'The Ken Song' by jdproject, from Street Fighter 2.
[12:28] Next up, we had 'Da Black Market' by Mythril Nazgul, D-Lux, Flik, and Joe Cam, from Earthbound. Of course, Larry couldn't resist rapping along towards the end.
[13:37] To switch up the eras we went with 'Metal Gear May Cry' by Jared Hudson, from Metal Gear Solid 2.
[14:43] Harmony's 'Dragon Song' from Secret of Mana was quite a crowdpleaser!
[15:48] A VGDJ favorite followed it up; 'Love Hurts' by djpretzel, from Sonic the Hedgehog. Great porn music? You decide.
[16:41] Dhsu and GrayLightning represent! Their mix 'Nayru's Love' from Zelda: Oracle of Ages struck a chord with the audience.
[17:44] It may be aging, but 'Bomberfuzz' by Fuzz from the game Bomberman is every bit as good now as it was when it came out.
[18:41] Anime fans = RPG fans, and RPG fans = Chrono Trigger fans, obviously. po!'s Electric Clouds was a logical choice for 'em.
[19:50] SuperBuckJazz by Estradasphere, from Super Mario Bros. 2. Need we say more?
[21:00] We finished up the medley with none other than 'Lover Reef' by zircon, pixietricks, D-Lux, shonensamurai, and GeoffreyTaucer, from Sonic & Knuckles.
[21:45] Thus concludes our medley, but if you'd like to hear it in full quality, you can pick up the MP3 right here.
[22:20] We tell the peeps that OCR isn't just about music, it's about community also, and we've proven that by way of our numerous meetups all over the world.
[23:24] Site projects have become regular occurences as well. As zircon explains, these are full albums that contain ReMixes of an entire soundtrack from a game. The audience seemed pretty excited at both the existing and upcoming projects we mentioned!
[25:05] Now we were pretty surprised when we heard this one. It appears as though OverClocked ReMix actually has an official podcast about the site and the community. WTF? Why didn't we hear about that? They even went to Video Games Live and got some pictures. I wish we could have done that. :(
[26:44] djpretzel is more than happy to tell the world about OCR's media exposure on the internet, in press, and on TV. What's really amazing is that pro game composers like Jeremy Soule have even showed their support for OCR by submitting their own ReMixes!
[27:57] We thought it would be worth mentioning some sister sites that feature some kind of remixes. These include the self-explanatory AnimeRemix, the up and coming Remix:Tha Sauce, and the slightly handicapped OverLooked ReMix, which Larry was proud to talk about. He also had a brief addendum to our site list; Ormgas, the 24/7 streaming OCReMix radio station.
[30:43] Our Powerpoint presentation ended here, but you can always download it and watch it for yourself. Props to pixietricks for putting it together.
[32:53] djpretzel and GeoffreyTaucer perform their collab 'Town Life' from Chrono Trigger!
[36:39] zircon subs in for Reuben Kee, accompanying pixietricks' as we perform 'The Place We Knew' from Chrono Trigger.
[41:27] This would have been the part where we did a trivia & giveaway with the audience, followed by a question and answer session, but due to some technical problems we couldn't capture it in the recording. Sowwy. :< However! We did manage to get the very last part of the Q&A, which featured a loyal OCR fan who actually came up to the panel, gave a little speech about how awesome we are, and then handed djpretzel a present...
[43:31] "It's a pretzel." What a way to close out a kick-ass panel.
[44:34] Suffice it to say we were very, very happy with the way things turned out. Not only was the panel really fun, but we had a great time at the rest of the con too! Just check out our action shot photo album. We really want to thank everyone who came to both the panels and the meetups and made them fun. Stay in touch via IRC, voicemail, or our OCR thread, and before this MP3 ends, check PodcastAlley and make sure you've voted for us this month!
[48:59] VOICEMAIL: Belthesar, Shivy, zircon's-got-a-letter guy, Otakon meetup group call, DJAnubis, DJ, and Fusion2004.
[53:24] [stinger]

VGDJ: Shownotes #051

[00:00] Our requests for karaoke may have ended with last week's episode, but OCR forum denizen EazyP doesn't let that stop him from leaving a heartwarming performance with us via voicemail.
[01:09] Ah, it's just little old us again. But don't get too used to it! Otakon (and another special episode) is just around the corner.
[02:16] Hey hey, it's a new month! Normally we would assume you guys know what this means by now, but with so many new listeners... well, you can never be too careful. Keep us high on the PodcastAlley rankings by voting for us there. It's easy, and there's no registration required.
[06:55] The Rama Report: He's early?! WTF? Anyway... Lockdown 2 at OCR was just completed, removing over 80 ReMixes from the site. However, those mixes can still be downloaded at "OC ReMoved" sites, such as those hosted by Xerol and Doulifee. OverLooked ReMix recently celebrated it's 500th ReMix to be posted. Finally, renaissance man and old-school OCReMixer Shael Riley performed live at a club in NYC on July 23rd and is planning more shows for the future. Rock on!
[10:30] ReMix Review: Just kidding :( Instead, we'll be playing clips from the winners of the latest three competitions on OCR, right after we go to the...
[11:25] Compo Report: FLMC, TOMC, and PRC.
[13:34] The winning entry of PRC72. From Mario Kart 64: 'Fat Man Meets Magic Turtle' by Moseph.
[15:26] The winning entry of FLMC2. Remixing Prophecy's "AirVille Theme", it's 'Angels Above' by Ghetto Lee Lewis.
[17:24] The winning entry of TOMC14. The theme was "magical cave", and Chris Serani nailed it best with 'Caves Are Dark'.
[19:24] Another contribution from a dedicated listener! Fragment was generous enough to record for us a 'report' of sorts on PLAY! - a Video Game Symphony, which he attended on July 27th in Philadelphia. Thanks!
[23:28] One could probably go their entire life without knowing about periodontal cysts, their location, or their psychological and physical effects. But where's the fun in that?
[24:26] Meetup Report: The community is as busy as ever, it seems! There are two (technically three) meetups occuring Aug 4-6 at Otakon in Baltimore, MA. Prominent OCR forum poster Nineko is organizing an excursion to the US and would appreciate some input; Los Angeles is an apparent starting point. A Salt Lake City meetup in Utah is being planned, with no definite date but a lot of interest. Mustin has proposed a meetup in Tulsa, Oklahoma for August 19th, centered around the Oklahoma Video Game Exhibition 2006 - note this has nothing to do with OneUp Studios. Lastly, a meetup in LA is planned for the Video Games Live show there on September 21st.
[30:32] Otakon panel!!! Yes! Our preparations are complete, and it should be very cool. Besides hangin' out and extolling the virtues of video game music, we'll be showing a slick Powerpoint presentation (w/ a medley of ReMixes of course) and doing some trivia with prizes. And, of course, there will be some live performances too: djpretzel and GeoffreyTaucer with 'Town Life', and your dear hosts with 'The Place We Knew'. 10am, August 4th... see ya there!
[33:12] Russian ReMix Roulette: A little bit of the old, and a little bit of the new. A solid roulette if we've ever seen one! (zircon edit: I must be stuck in a timewarp... I coulda sworn Revolver Ocelot was still on the front page) Now, we've gone pretty crazy lately when it comes to rolling the die, so a more down-to-earth roll was called for. We ended up with 'Vanilla Extract' by Goolancer, from the game Super Mario World.
[37:49] pixietricks and zircon ponder the implications of a Solitaire ReMix and what it means for the community at large; of course, even V's masterpiece cannot stack up to the horrors that lurk beyond the judges' panel in the OMGSOBAD folder.
[42:23] Time for us to relax before we launch into a weekend of meetup and convention goodness. Here's the obligatory link to vote for us in this new month of August. Don't forget to hit up our store while we're gone, regardless of whether you plan on going to Otakon or not. Also, be an informed listener and peep our thread from time to time: you never know what you might see there!
[45:54] VOICEMAIL: Ominous caller, mystery caller, Fragment, DrumUltimA, Fusion2004, garbled caller.
[48:57] [stinger]
