VGDJ: Shownotes #059

[00:00] Yay! We love being integrated with popular movie plots.
[01:20] As you may have noticed by looking at the file size and length of this show, we've trimmed down a bit in preparation for our glorious Episode 60. But lucky for you, we've kept in all of our sugary goodness (including a NEW CONTEST). Mmm, trans-fatty acid.
[02:25] Well, it's *almost* October, which means it's *almost* time to vote for us at PodcastAlley... -_- Stupid calendar! Stupid 30 days in September!
[05:50] The Rama Report: GeoffreyTaucer conceived the idea of a "Live Performers Database" awhile back on the ReMixing forum, but it is only recently that Xerol was able to actually make that idea a reality. Very useful, guys.
[07:55] ReMix Review: Day of the Tentacle 'The Great Tentacle Pianist' by Mazedude ... We wholeheartedly support anything that involves tentacles, pianists, tentacle pianists, and Mazedudes. pixietricks admits, we DO have a bit of a soft spot for those floppy, anthropomorphic monsters, and what better way to enjoy them than this highly creative ReMix by a well-known ReMixer?
[12:21] Compo Report: CMC, FLMC, PRC, TOMC X. Thanks Chad, even if we can't decide on the pronunciation of your name (omg that's never happened before).
[15:09] Egads, what's this?! OCR shirts and hoodies are finally available again? Yes, it's true! djpretzel has forged a new alliance with eStarland, a game and anime retailer, to provide shirts and hoodies of all sizes to the loyal patrons of OverClocked ReMix. Unfortunately for one of our hosts, there are no small or babydoll sizes, but just about every other fit is covered, and cheaper than before. This item brings us to our next point...
[17:27] NEW CONTEST! We're giving away OCR and/or VGDJ shirts, and three lucky listeners are gonna get one. To enter, you need to answer the following question for us; what's the craziest thing you've ever done to promote video game music, OCR, or VGDJ? We don't just mean "I told some of my friends." ;) We're talking things like switching out music at your school dance with the Tetris soundtrack, or mowing the letters "VGDJ" into your lawn. That kinda thing. And if you haven't done something like that, well, you have until 12PM noon (EST) on Wednesday, October 4th to submit your entry to vgdjpodcast@gmail.com. There's still time!
[20:04] Russian ReMix Roulette: Hoo boy. The roulette is as weird as ever as we try to do the entire thing in Russian accents. Of course, it turns out to be more like... part Transylvanian, part Italian, and part French, with some Russian influences, but HEY! That's beside the point. The REAL point is... uh... OK, maybe there is no point. But the music is still good! We ended up with Darangen's 'Atonement', from Chrono Trigger.
[27:21] zircon and pixietricks give some serious consideration to a joint career in showbiz. Hmm... *collective chin rub*
[29:28] Time for us to sign off and go back to 'the real world', but we're anxiously anticipating your contest entries for Episode 60. Even if you don't enter, you can still browse our Cafepress store, talk to us in our thread, and vote (today AND tomorrow) at PodcastAlley.
[31:12] VOICEMAIL: Jiggles McPuff, Kento.
[32:07] [stinger]

VGDJ: Shownotes #058

[00:00] We're prepared for any and all bad jokes that may arise from recent developments. :)
[01:05] Extra, extra! Stop the presses! Two new judges on the panel? And pixietricks is one of 'em?! Yay! Judge Jilly will surely be a force to be reckoned with as she metes out justice in the form of stern NO votes.
[03:09] Just as a reminder, we do accept Paypal donations at the address: vgdjpodcast@gmail.com - so if you like the show, even a small contribution would be appreciated. Alternatively, you can peruse our thread on OCR, as well as our non-profit Cafepress store. Also, vote for us at PodcastAlley!
[04:23] Like VGDJ, but missed out on some older eps? Then check out our torrent page, where you can pick up all the previous episodes in groups of 10 at a time. Seeders wanted!
[05:17] The Rama Report: AmigaRemix has unveiled a new site design! OCR forum member Global-Trance has released a downloadable version of Nintendo's press kit for their new system, the Wii. The first ever "Dwelling of Chiptunes" contest has been announced by Jredd, which should delight at least a few of ya. Lastly, Xerol recently started up a game of musical telephone on OCR, mimicing the children's game of the same name.
[09:10] ReMix Review: Double Dragon 2 'Twin Blood' by Sixto Sounds ... Dayum! Mr. Medrano (aka "Sixto") may not have been around for as long as ReMixers like goat or SnappleMan, but he's just as good at creating kickass guitar ReMixes. This one ain't for the faint of heart; you gotta be metal to the CORE. Or somesuch. Anyway, as an added bonus, Juan dropped us a line and went into a little more detail about this most awesome ReMix.
[13:40] ReMix Review: Metroid Prime 2 'Torvus Clockwork' by Darkesword ... In stark contrast to the ReMixes that were posted before and after this one, Darkesword brings us a markedly lighter track. New agey goodness abound! We suspect a bit of Wingless influence, mayhaps, but Shariq didn't send us a clip... so I guess we'll never know!
[17:20] ReMix Review: Castlevania 3 'Froggy Mosh' by goat ... Whether you like Castlevania, guitars, frogs, OR moshes, you will most surely take pleasure in this rock mix. goat's got a distinct style that he's been perfecting for years, and if you dug this track (we did!) then you'll have a load of fun over at his website, which has a good deal more tunes, many of which aren't on OCR.
[21:08] Compo Report: FLMC, TOMC15, TOMC X1, and PRC. Excitement on the competition front, eh?!
[24:17] ReMix Projects are cool and all, but the real excitement is on the forums. Yea! Two site projects of interest include the collection of new forum avatars for the upcoming vBulletin change, and the OCR Mascot Bio Project. To tell us more about the latter, listener Andrew Anderson recorded a brief report for us. Thanks bro!
[28:43] Meetup Report: Video Games Live LA, the Toronto meet, Super Smash Brothers Melee Tournament in San Jose, Sydney (October version), Brazil, Pittsburg, and Saskatchewan. Wow.
[33:05] Russian ReMix Roulette: Thankfully, our blood caffeine levels appear to have dropped back to normal for this RRR... sort of. We had one of the most intensely awesome roulettes ever this week (except for one), so the pressure was really on. Luckily, fate averted disaster and analoq's Sonik Azure from Sonic 3 saved the day.
[42:05] *Three* judges for the price of one. It's unbelievable! big giant circles - aka Jimmy Hinson - joins us for the rest of the show, making sure that people know he's not just the "new judge who isn't pixietricks". He gives us the lowdown on how he discovered OCR and started ReMixing, his personal and musical background, what's up with his drawl, and more. Also, both he and pixietricks offer their insights into what it's like to be a new judge, and more importantly, they discuss with zircon how one properly formats a NO vote. Hey, it's an important decision!
[53:55] bgc helps us close out the show, and even he knows that y'all should be voting for us. Thanks again for coming on, Jimmy!
[56:14] VOICEMAIL: Kento, Salty, "the principal", postulating guy, Shivy, and shawnphase.
[59:53] [stinger]

BACKGROUND MUSIC used in Episode 058, in order of appearance:

VGDJ: Shownotes #057

[00:00] Fun fact! For those of you who don't know, zircon wrote the intro theme song for VGDJ and pixietricks recorded the vocals and added sound effects.
[00:54]
Ah, back on our own show! The Game Music Radio interview went great, and the promo that Brian & Becky made for us is awesome. Thanks again, guys!
[02:55] OMG a new collab from your VGDJ hosts? Yeah, and if you missed the GMR interview, you missed the mix too! Better keep yo'self updated on the FF7 Project thread.
[03:58] Be an informed listener and make good use of our OCR thread - we keep telling y'all, sometimes we post stuff there that doesn't get posted anywhere else! ;)
[05:32] Oh no! As of this writing, we've dropped out of the top ten. But we're not out of the fight yet. Keep voting for us at PodcastAlley and we might make it back in there.
[07:01] Awww yea. Flow Basket is on the way. But first:
[07:34] The Rama Report: Electronic artist BT and legendary guitarist Steve Vai, among others, will be present at the Video Games Live show to be held at the Hollywood Bowl. Compyfox notes that his list of software/hardware equivalents has been recently featured in a video podcast. Also, a group buy is going on for the software "East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Choirs", discounting it to 40% of list price.
[09:35] ReMix Review: Final Fantasy Adventure 'Chocobo!' by big giant circles ... Two words summarize this ReMix - hoo hoos. But nah, in all seriousness, this is an excellent electronic offering by bgc. While the Chocobo theme is usually on the annoying side, this ReMix turns it into something we thought was really fun and enjoyable to listen to - which, as bgc states in his clip, was the point!
[14:47] ReMix Review: Metal Gear Solid 'Legend of the Snake 2: Snake vs. Dragon' by Reuben Kee ... Well, someone here at VGDJ certainly likes this mix. It's the sequel to the first "Legend of the Snake" mix, and as pixietricks points out, Mr. Kee has definitely improved. It would be hard to call LotS2 anything but epic, with it's massive ethnic and orchestral parts combined with synths and other electronic elements. A total of four thumbs up from us!
[19:27] The Compo Report: PRC, FLMC, and TOMC.
[22:17] The Flow Basket: Episode 2. zircon continues his ReMixing tutorial series, this time demonstrating another method of getting a ReMix started and taking you through all the steps, from analyzing the source tune part by part to writing variations on it and layering different elements together. Smooth.
[35:24] The Meetup Report: Toronto, Sydney, UK, Pittsburg, and Seattle meetups all in the works.
[38:53] Will you be in the New York City area on September 21st? Do you like Shael Riley? If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, then you should definitely check out his upcoming show at The Fat Baby in NYC. If he can book at least 40 people, he'll have the opportunity of opening for some bigger acts at a better venue. Show Shael some love!!!
[41:03] It started like a Russian ReMix Roulette like any other... but it wasn't! pixietricks has a serious case of the giggles (or is she completely insane?) at the thought of zircon in transparent red pantyhose. What this has to do with 'Team Gato' by Dale North and Mustin (from Chrono Trigger), no one really knows. Oh well. A fitting song for one of our weirder RRRs.
[50:20] Is it a full moon? A little MSG in the drinking water, perhaps? Whatever it may be, your hosts are feeling extra silly as they muse over VGDJ Brand ReMixer Pudding, Albert Blum, pixietricks' new role in an upcoming opera at Peabody, and the general randomness of the show thus far. Hey, we're allowed to be weird sometimes... ok, maybe all the time.
[55:55] No contact info for you! But, do feel free to check out our photo album (ALBUM DAMNIT) and vote for us at PodcastAlley to return us to the top 10.
[57:16] VOICEMAIL: Abadoss, Freudian analysis guy, Fragment, DJAnubis, Fragment again (w/ song), and genghisdani.
[60:24] [stinger]

VGDJ: Shownotes #056

[00:00] One must truly appreciate what is undoubtedly the greatest marketing idea of our time.
[01:04] Enter VGDJ, stage left. Wait, Saturday? Huh? If you're reading this you've surely noticed our schedule has changed in a way that should better accomodate both you, our loyal listeners, as well as us.
[03:15] We don't need proxy voting to stay high on the PodcastAlley charts! Show those forum meanies that we mean business and keep on giving us your legit votes.
[04:29] The Rama Re-oops, maybe not this week. Buuuut we do have our own little announcement to make. Listen in to the next episode of "The Next Level" on GameMusicRadio, cause we're gonna be interviewed on there!
[06:36] ReMix Review: Final Doom 'Milagro Del Demonio' by TO ... Yay for Aussies! TO seems incapable of dropping a groove that ISN'T catchy, and the Doom soundtracks are really suited for his style. Like his Raptor mix, it certainly wouldn't have hurt to have an extra instrument or two in there; but even considering that small quibble, this is still Hott stuff.
[09:36] ReMix Review: Star Ocean: The Second Story 'Into Your Kamikaze' by blizihizake / Blake Perdue ... Like Darkesword, chthonic, and Tyler Heath, blizihizake is one of the few mixers left using exclusively free samples. Yet even with that handicap, he managed to create an incredibly intricate orchestral mix with great dynamics and a great arrangement. He said his goal was to prove that he could write an orchestral ReMix that wasn't "boring". Suffice it to say, we think he succeeded!
[12:49] The Compo Report: PRC, TOMC, and FLMC.
[14:32] \m/ \m/ - That's right. Those are "the horns", poorly represented to the best of zircon's ability, in ASCII. And you're gonna need 'em if you plan on listening to or participating in Dwelling of Duels. DoD is a monthly ReMix competition that many OCReMixers participate in, and it's based around live instruments. If you're just not getting your daily recommended dosage of ROCK from OCR, than you gotta check DoD out. Don't take our word for it though...
[15:41] Goemon's Great Adventure 'Devil's Heaven' by SnappleMan (DoD June winning entry)
[17:37] Nooooo, GrayLightning! ;_; Our beloved judge, moderator, and new age/orchestral ReMixer has said goodbye to OCR and moved on to a professional, full time career in music. And while no one can fill the gap that he left, it is of some comfort that zyko has sorted out things in his personal life and has made return to OCR and the judge's panel. We hope that will also translate to new ReMixes, now that he has some free time. With these changes, what can we expect to see next? Perhaps Wingless making a triumphant return? ... well, maybe not...
[19:59] The Meetup Report: OCR Toronto, tentative Pittsburgh, PA meetup, tentative Australia QLD meetup, Video Games Live in LA meetup, an additional planned Seattle meet, and Shael Riley NYC concert.
[23:37] Russian ReMix Roulette: WEEK ONE of the Campaign to Keep the RRR Alive (or CKRRRA for short) has begun. We will not idly sit by and watch our Roulette be heartlessly dismantled piece by piece. djp, you monster! A fitting mix was selected to represent our noble cause - Final Fantasy 7 'Fight On' by CarboHydroM.
[31:20] Nothin' like a glass of water to sip while your hosts discuss the merits of eating VGDJ Brand ReMixing Fuel, their ReMixer handles, Hot Pockets, zircon's incredibly smooth and obviously effective pickup line, which is so powerful that it cannot be written down in any form, and more. Good times.
[38:04] Will pixietricks be swayed by the irresistable charm of Kuroikaze's pickup line? Will Rama ever consistently submit a report? Why did we say Cyan_Ide's recording was good when it was actually worse than usual? Find out, on the next episode of DRAGONBALL Z! Err, VGDJ. And to pass the time while you're waiting, visit our OCR thread, Cafepress store, and photo album. Oh, and voting for us at podcastalley.com to keep us in the top 10 of ALL podcasts wouldn't hurt either.
[41:02] VOICEMAIL: Kento, Fragment, Salty, DJAnubis, Fragment again, and Peter.
[44:40] [stinger]

VGDJ: Shownotes #055

[00:00] First contact with the "crybaby emos" has been made. A historic moment.
[01:18] IF-YOU-THOUGHT-THIS-WAS-ANNOYING, WE-WERE-CONSIDERING-USING-MICROSOFT-SAM-FOR-A-WHOLE-SHOW...
[01:49] *stretch* Ahh, now that we got some of that silly "real life" stuff out of the way, it's time to jump back into the fray - just in time too, as OCR1500 was recently released. By the way, spiffy video, huh?
[02:29] First show of the month = VOTE for VGDJ on podcastalley. It's easy, and every vote brings us closer to the overall top 10 list.
[04:25] TORRENTS! Take a trip down memory lane and check out previous episodes via this new (and bandwidth-friendly) method of downloading.
[07:12] The Rama Report: The Earthbound remix project, Bound Together, has been re-released with both new and updated material. Zeality has released an authoratative rip of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack that is more accurate than any other SPC to date. Xerol, CE, Jato, Fusion2004, and SgtRama have completed a 6-track original album made with FLStudio's "3xOsc" synth entitled Album6. Lastly, Brenden, an organizer of MAGFest, is seeking out suggestions for panels for the 5th iteration of the festival - contact him if you have any.
[11:27] ReMix Review: Tales of Phantasia 'The Koan of Drums' by djpretzel ... The 1500th ReMix to be posted to OCR, this is certainly a landmark mix, and Dave did not fail to disappoint. Ever since we first heard this back at the VGL meetup, we were floored by the massive energy of the percussion and the expansive arrangement, and we are just as impressed today. We consider this to be among djp's best; just listen to hear why.
[18:05] ReMix Review: Chrono Cross 'Reminiscence of Feelings' by Vampire Hunter Dan ... I say! We probably had a little too much fun with the 'baroque' theme here, but in all seriousness, this is a quality orchestral ReMix. It has a rather level set of dynamics, so if you're expecting a film score-esque Jared Hudson mix, you won't find it here. However, it's still worth a listen, so czech it.
[21:11] The Compo Report: PRC, TOMC, and FLMC.
[22:47] You know OCR1500? The one we've been talking about for over a month now? Well, now that it's finally here, there's a LOT to talk about. We go over the cosmetic changes to the site, new affiliations with companies like zzounds and eStarland (now managing t-shirts, yay!), ChipAmp, backend changes to the way the site is run, and more. The new ads might not be our cup of tea (heh heh), but still, very cool stuff. Here's to another 1500 mixes!
[30:46] The Meetup Report: OverCoat is planning a Seattle meetup for September 16th; no specific location announced yet. Two meetups are happening on September 21st, on opposite sides of the country: Trenthian's Video Games Live meetup in Los Angeles, and Shael Riley's live concert in New York City at the Fat Baby. The Toronto meetup is currently without an organizer, but it still planned for September 30th and could be centered around PLAY! as well. Finally, another Australia meetup is being planned, but there are no details yet; if you're interested, check the thread.
[34:22] Russian ReMix Roulette: Oh, the excitement! This was the first RRR ever to be performed in the middle of a tropical storm with both hosts on-site at the same time. The die of power was hurled into the air by pixietricks and subjected to the forces of the elements, but zircon faced the storm and risked his life to catch the die in a heroic manuever that will not be soon forgotten. The fated choice was revealed to be McVaffe's 'DeeJay's Caribbean Rave', from Super Street Fighter 2.
[41:15] You know that when pixietricks has some fuzz to stroke and zircon's off to play with his dice, it's time for us to sign off for the week. Our vote campaign has been working, as we just passed 100 votes for the month - a new record, possibly - so keep them coming. For more VGDJ goodness, there's our OCR thread, Cafepress store, photo album (ALBUM!!!) and of course, our new torrent system. Thanks for tuning in!
[42:59] VOICEMAIL: Abadoss, SgtRama, mouse story guy, Final Fantasy story guy, Fragment, FIFTY FIVE guy, Kento, OmegaSephiroth, Shivy, creepy yearning guy.
[49:08] [stinger]
